Package Redesign Saves Millions
Challenged to reduce packaging costs, New-Tech also improved the package's ease of opening and environmental metrics. To save money, New-Tech replaced the previous PVC clamshell with a recycled PET mock-clamshell blister, reducing the plastic content by over 50% and the package cost by 35%. While the new design maintains the same footprint, the graphics area has increased dramatically. The package is also much easier to open and environmentally sound in its approach.
Medical Device Packaging Success
After a surgery, unused sterile components are returned to the device manufacturer for future surgeries. To re-capture traceability information is extremely time-consuming. New-Tech accelerated this process with a program to unitize similar components in a shrink sleeve, so that returned items could be received as a group rather than individually. New-Tech also introduced a shipper that reduced dimensional weight and ancillary charges from the carrier. These improvements amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in freight costs and significantly higher throughput.
Throw Away the Box
During a packaging audit, New-Tech discovered one of its customers using a box for its smallest, non-fragile products. Some quick resourcefulness led to huge savings. By using a bubble bag inside of a FedEx envelope, the customer saved not only on materials, but also on labor (no folding and taping boxes) and freight (it is less expensive to ship an envelope than a box). The package is better for the environment and easier for the end user to dispose of.
